The Main is a new museum devoted to the art and artists of Los Angeles. The museum is under construction across three buildings in Downtown Los Angeles, with the historic Hellman building, as the anchor. The Main will continue to open in phases over the coming years, unveiling new spaces in its nearly 100,000-square-foot complex. In fall 2016, The Main opened Beta Main, a site to experiment with everything from new forms of museum seating to the introduction of bilingual offerings, along with the development of an Artist-in-Residence program to directly support Los Angeles artists—a central component of The Main’s mission. True to its name, Beta Main is a site for testing and learning in anticipation of the creation of The Main.
In January 2018, five new artist residency studios will open, followed by an additional 2,700 square feet of gallery space on the second-floor mezzanine. When complete, The Main will also include a rooftop plaza with an amphitheater and café.
