The V&A’s pioneering partnership with Design Society in China

The International Initiatives department at the V&A seeks to expand the international reach, reputation and impact of the V&A by opening up our collections to global audiences, scholars and creative practitioners and to bring benefit to the Museum, our visitors and our partners by broadening our horizons, enriching our knowledge and expertise.

In 2014 the V&A entered into a pioneering collaboration with China Merchants Group (CMG) to support CMG’s ambitious plan to develop a major museum of design in China, ‘Design Society’ (DS) which opens in late 2017. For this collaboration the V&A will deliver a semi-permanent V&A gallery devoted to 20th and 21st century design, provide touring exhibitions and play an advisory role in helping DS develop its standard operations procedures, its learning strategy and provide training to the DS staff in key fields of museum management.

This session will explore the V&A’s approach to this project as an iterative and inclusive process. It will focus on how we have developed strategies for public engagement and building relationships with audiences far beyond our museum walls in London. The principles of collaboration, research and engagement are central to the working model for this project in order to support the development of an institution that draws upon best practice from the V&A but is appropriate and embedded in the specific context of Shenzhen in order to develop a an exhibition and public programme that is relevant to people’s everyday lives.
