Case Study

Many museums today are using their expertise, their collections and their programs to become significant players in the world of cultural diplomacy – what has at times been called “soft power” or even “curators as Kissingers” (Ruiz 2014).

This presentation explores the idea of museums as powerbrokers in international relations, taking in example the recent work of the Australian National Maritime Museum to address the issue of illegal salvaging of the Australian WWII wreck of HMAS Perth (I) which lies in Indonesian waters, in close collaboration with our Indonesian colleagues.
