Case Study

How does a heritage institution, whose buildings are the symbols of British colonial power, deal with the dispossession and devastation of the Aboriginal peoples of Sydney? In telling the Story of Sydney, how can it give voice to the world’s oldest continuous culture?

Overcoming resistance and historical traumas, the museum has built Aboriginal partnerships – community, creative and business – to co-create festivals based on ancient practices that celebrate the whale, the eel and the songlines; and garnered the respect of elders to uncover the truths of frontier massacres that are at the heart of recasting the narrative of Sydney’s origins, beginning with the renewal of the world heritage listed Hyde Park Barracks Museum.
